One of my strongest values in both my personal life and in business is growth. I love and embrace the concept that we are always learning and evolving. I am not the same person I was 3 years ago, and I imagine you aren’t either.
I think naturally we are in some ways drawn to change and self-improvement, but let’s face it. Change is scary! Anything that involves the unknown is scary.
Normally we have some control over when we make changes. We can ponder ideas, wait till we build up some courage before taking the leap of faith. But with COVID, many of us were forced to make changes.
For me, this big forced change was moving from helping clients face to face, to helping them over Zoom/video, as well as quickly learning the ins and outs of a digital business. This was incredibly challenging for me, as I had always been that girl who ends up in tears, calling her boyfriend over desperately for help because “computer says NO!”. (Can you relate?)
The fact that I am now running and building an online coaching business, is sometimes a bit comical when I think about how many times I’ve said in my life “I HATE TECH”.
But aside from that, something quite special happened when COVID hit. I had 2-3 months of being quiet in my clinic with the first lockdown, which allowed me time and space to reflect.
I thought a lot about the clients I had worked with, what their barriers and challenges were. I thought about the problems I loved solving the most, and I came to the following conclusions:
1.Just because people have the nutrition knowledge, it doesn’t always solve their issues with food and their body. How we think and feel plays a central role in our eating patterns.
2. I get the most fulfilment out of helping women who want more than just weight loss. Women who also care about having a positive relationship with food, and share similar values to me like fun, balance, friends, and family.
3. In order to help women truly break free from the diet cycle, and create a sustainable healthy lifestyle, they need more than just education. They need not only the “what” but the “how” to apply it to their daily lives and work through challenges that arise.
I talked about all of this with my Mum who I was living with at the time, and she said – “Honestly Kim, you should do NLP. It will help you to help your clients tremendously, and it sounds like you want to be more of a Coach rather than a consultant.”
This was the first time I considered the term “Coach” and it really resonated with me. I already felt more like a coach, than just a consultant in the way I worked with my clients. In terms of the NLP idea, I was sceptical at first because it wasn’t a university-based education program. But after doing some research, and learning that some of the best super-achiever coaches in the world used NLP as a base for helping people, I developed a gut feeling that this was the next part of my learning and growth journey. It was time to go deeper and learn more about “why we do what do” and how our minds worked.
So I booked the course, gave up all my November and December (Bye Bye Summer – my favourite time of the year!) and went in thinking that I was just going to learn a few tools that would go alongside my Nutrition practice.
But that is not what happened. The course blew me away, I couldn’t believe how relevant all the skills were to the problems women were facing. Everything from body image, emotional eating, binge eating, and managing emotions like guilt and anxiety. I could now understand why some people found it easy to change their eating patterns, and why other people struggled. What tools we actually ALL have in our minds to break unhelpful habits.
After finishing the course, I immediately started applying the tools I had learned, and the feedback and results confirmed that I was on the right path.
I felt so strongly about the mind playing such a key part in helping people with food and their body, that I chose to rebrand from “KB Nutrition” to “Mind Your Nutrition Coaching”.
Mind Your Nutrition Coaching is based on 5 Coaching Pillars
- Clear Your Nutrition Confusion
- Master Your Mind
- Befriend Food and Your Body
- Eat Food You Enjoy
- Design Your Day
I believe we need to consider all 5 of these pillars in order to achieve lasting changes.
I then launched my first “Food Freedom Coaching” package, which was a 3-month package working through each of these pillars, targeted specifically for women struggling with their weight, body image, and eating patterns such as binge-eating, emotional eating, and the “all or nothing mentality”.
After one year of this new method, and taking time for reflection, I finally think I have found my niche. Not just who I help, but how I help. By working with women over a 3 month period, and having longer sessions where I can help not only with WHAT to eat, but the “why” behind their eating patterns, I am finally seeing the big shifts that are needed for lasting changes.
BUT NOW THE NEW CHALLENGE – What the heck do I call myself?
My gosh, that has been the biggest challenge of them all. If I’m completely honest, I’ve had, and still in some ways HAVING an identity crisis. I still identify strongly as a Nutritionist. But I don’t see myself as just that anymore.
So I’ve come up with: Holistic Non-Diet Nutritionist and Transformational Health Coach.
It’s difficult because I don’t want to fall into the same category as other “non-diet nutritionists”, because some really don’t place any focus on nutrition science and nourishment. It’s ALL intuitive eating and body image work. Whereas, I am very passionate about the wholefood nutrition element. I strongly believe we still need to understand nutrition and how different foods impact us, instead of leaving it all to intuitive eating. I also sit in the middle when it comes to weight loss. I am not “anti-weight loss” – I am just anti-weight loss pursuit when it starts to have a negative impact on a women’s mental health, physical health, and enjoyment of life.
So Where to next?
Well, I have now taken on the task of understanding not just how nutrition and the body work, but also how our minds work. In other words, nutrition science, and neuroscience in a sandwich. Both of these fields are ever-changing, controversial, and political. So I’ll just be doing my best to stay up to date in both areas, and share my learnings with you as I go on both Instagram and youtube.
Other new things that are coming up…
- A 12 Week Group coaching program – Stay tuned for when the wait list doors open. This program will be all about teaching women everything I know to date about nutrition, fad diets, how your body works, and how your mind drives your eating behaviors.
- An Eating Disorder Recovery Coaching Package – for women who are suffering with Binge eating or Bulimia. After much thought I have decided to start helping people who have been diagnosed eating disorders. As part of my ongoing learnings in psychology, I recently completed an ICAT-BV training – Integrative Cognitive Affective Therapy for Bulimia Nervosa.
As far as coaching goes, I currently offer a 1:1 Food Freedom Coaching Package for women who are struggling with their weight, health, body image and eating patterns. If this is something you want to work on this year- simply book in a call to get started.
Thank you so much for reading if you got this far. I appreciate your support, and staying by me through all these changes…
Kim xx
