Coffee with Kim Episode #9 – Stacie Garland THE TRUTH ABOUT BODYBUILDING and how to rebuild body trust
Welcome back to another Coffee with Kim Episode!
This week I unpack the TRUTH about bodybuilding and how to rebuild body trust after bodybuilding with Stacie Garland; Ex Bodybuilder, Health Psychologist and Body Image Coach.
If you didn’t know this already, after recovering from my initial eating disorder I fell straight into body building. Which seemed like a “healthy” hobby at the time, due to the higher intake of carbs, less cadio, and more strength training. To those following me on social media it would have looked like a really positive experience all the way through.
However, what we see on social media isn’t necessarily what’s going on behind the scenes.
In this coffee with Kim episode, I’m bringing on my fellow ex body building sister Stacy Garland who competed at the same time as I did around 2014-2015.
She shares her own personal journey of going from weighing and measuring ever gram of food, feeling terrified of any weight gain, to now living a life of food freedom, health, and body confidence.
What we cover:
1) What initially triggered Stacie into food and body obsession
2) How perfectionism and being “driven” make us more prone to food and body obsession.
3) The impact body building can have on your relationships
4) What to do when people comment about your food or your weight when trying to “eat normally” again.
5) How to transition gently from strict dieting, to more intuitive eating, without feeling out of control.
Some Key take-homes from this episode:
• What we see on social media, doesn’t actually depict the full experience women are going through on a “comp” prep. It is often glorified.
• Compliments and praise around our body can cause us to attach too much self-worth to how we look.
• It’s okay to ask people for support when you are healing.
• Your smallest leanest you, doesn’t = the happiest, most confident you.
• Going from a strict meal plan straight to intuitive eating isn’t necessarily the best approach.
It takes time to build up trust, and it’s okay to do it in stages.
xx Kim
